Surrounding the central plaza on which Seville’s mighty cathedral squats is the charming old Jewish neighborhood of Santa Cruz, one of Andalusia’s most iconic barrios.
This is the colorful, characterful center of old Seville, and although it’s always packed with tourists, it hasn’t lost the small-town ambiance that has defined it for centuries. This maze of narrow cobbled streets and little squares brings you out onto the absurdly romantic Plaza Alfaro, likely to be busy with tourists pointing their cameras upwards and snapping away at the building that is said to have inspired the balcony scene in the Rossini's opera "The Barber of Seville", a masterpiece of opera buffa, inspired by Beaumarchais' play of the same name.

Whether this tale is apocryphal or not, it’s easy to imagine Figaro scaling this, one of Seville’s prettiest buildings, to reach the object of his desire.
Just to wander around Santa Cruz, and almost certainly get lost, if it’s your first time, is an experience in itself. You just have to come to Seville, savor its magic, stroll in the narrow streets full of legends, perhaps humming Rossini and Mozart.
While I'm walking here, where love, legends, duels, even stories related to literature, art and music have been consummated, I'm wearing a top with side pockets and high-waisted trousers in the most classic combo color: black and camel, because it takes little to be chic, like in this Parisienne look with a retro mood.

ReplyDeleteSaluti,
Flo
