Santa Cruz is the best barrio in Andalusia for aimless wandering.
Its unfeasibly narrow streets make those of Triana, Seville’s former gypsy quarter, look like Parisian boulevards and most are impassable by car – meaning meanderers have this charming neighborhood pretty much to themselves.
Discovering its secret squares and stumbling upon its beautiful old palaces and churches is one of the best ways to pass a long morning or afternoon in the Andalusian capital.
And don’t worry if you get lost, because it’s a rite of passage for the first-time visitor to Seville to become happily disoriented in Santa Cruz.
My daily path starts from the Patio de Banderas: this plaza is located in the area of the "Reales Alcázares", in addition to being small (1441 m²), this courtyard is protected by several low, surrounding buildings that seem to hide it in some way.
Seeing as this plaza seems more like a communal residents courtyard than a plaza, it's possible to see some of the city's symbolic views from the "Patio de Banderas" and you can see the top part of the "Giralda" and the cathedral, for example.
You can enter the district of "Santa Cruz" from this plaza.
Walking along the wall of the Royal Palace you can reach the Plaza de Doña Elvira, one of the most typical of the district with benches covered with tiles and a stone fountain in the shade of orange trees. Finally, along Calle Gloria you can reach the Plaza de los Venerables, where is the hospital from which the name derives.
By day or by night you will not get tired of contemplating this authentic miracle of harmony...
On a dark denim base, I'm wearing a leopard coat with unusual colors, because the animal print depopulates for this SS, while I stop to admire from the Patio de Banderas the most impressive view of the Giralda and the Cathedral that emerge from the Alcazar wall.
