Così, a primo impatto, troppo traffico.

Known as the "Paris of Greek Macedonia", Thessaloniki definitely has a different ambience than Athens. Maybe it’s the city’s close proximity to the sea and the elegant Parisian-style buildings. Or perhaps it’s the vibrant ‘youthful’ feel because of the young people who stroll the plateias and crowd the sea-side tavernas. Thessalonki is, after all, a university city so a large portion of the population is young students.
I have always loved traveling to places I’ve seen in films or read about in books. I’ve wanted to visit Thessaloniki, ever since I read Victoria Hislop’s The Thread, a sprawling family saga that starts in 1917.
It was four years after the great fire of August 5, 1917, which razed most of Thessaloniki’s historic center – homes, churches, mosques, synagogues, offices, stores and workshops – within 32 hours, destroying 9,500 buildings and leaving an estimated 77,000 people homeless: 55,000 Jews, 10,000 Muslims and 10,000 Christians. Later the city was rebuilt in an Art Deco style under the supervision of French architect Ernest Hebrard, on the basis of a radical rejuvenation plan: it was the biggest city revamp Greece has ever seen.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the modern city and to begin with, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it.
The city sprawls around an arc of coastline at the top of the Thermaic Gulf, it is perfectly poised on the water’s edge. Thessaloniki is easy to fall in love with, it has beauty, chaos, history and culture, a remarkable cuisine and wonderful, vast sea views, and streets full of life and vibrancy.
The different neighbourhoods are little worlds unto themselves, and when you climb up to the Byzantine walls and take in the whole of Thessaloniki at sunset, you see what a sprawling, organic city it is. Old and new cohabit wonderfully.
I stayed at Mediterranean Palace Hotel, a luxury hotel strategically positioned in the heart of Thessaloniki, with magnificent views of the Gulf, surrounded by bars and cafés and perfect to explore the rest of the city.
Ernest Hébrard also brought a Parisian feel to the new metropolis with long boulevards, pedestrian walkways, expansive squares and plenty of trees, which both provide shade and help with the air quality.
But the truth is that what I most liked about the city was just the city itself, dotted with historic sights, and its laid-back yet vibrant atmosphere, its calling card. A full immersion in a Greece out of the usual routes, a genuine Greece, just like the inhabitants of the city who, when the sun goes down, color the streets with a vibrant party atmosphere. A walk along the seafront of Thessaloniki, accompanied by the gentle breeze that always blows from the sea is a panacea to metabolize all that the city offers its visitors.
From there, I walked the short distance to the famous historic area known as Ladadika, which somehow survived the fire, wearing a colorful floral print outfit.
