The city center of Thessaloniki is where you’ll find most of the major historical sites.
Two of the most famous which you should not miss are the Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda. Located almost next to each other, both of these sites are tied to the Roman Emperor Galerius.
The Arch of Galerius, also known as “Kamara”, was built in 298-299 AD to commemorate Galerius’s victorious campaign against the Persians and is in remarkable condition. The pillars are decorated with friezes celebrating the victory.
The structure was originally an eight-pillared gateway that formed a triple arch faced with brick and marble panels with sculptural relief. Only three of the eight pillars and parts of the masonry cores survive. The two pillars that flank the central arched passageway retain their marble sculptures that depict Roman soldiers fighting against the Persians.
The Arch formed part of the road that connected the Palace of Galerius and the Rotunda.
This last monument is a very impressive circular red brick structure with a hemispherical dome and eight large rectangular recesses in the cylindrical wall, built in 306 AD.
It’s not clear whether it was intended to be a mausoleum for Galerius himself or as a Temple to Zeus. It is one of the few intact Roman buildings in Greece.
In the Christian era, it was turned into a church "Agios Georgios" and later still a mosque after the city fell to the Turks in 1427 – a single minaret is still standing.
Currently known as the Church of the Rotunda, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988 along with several other churches in Thessaloniki.
While visiting Thessaloniki, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit the Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda, two important landmarks that showcase the rich history of the city.
In the gardens of this large circular building, whose majesty emanates an idea of serene power, I'm wearing a sporty-chic outfit built around a pair of gym pants, combining it in a chic way, with the super stylish attitude of those who love to play with fashion.
